Return to Black Stars – Akufo-Addo urges Gyan

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has urged Ghana international Asamoah Gyan to rescind his decision to retire from the Black Stars and make himself available for selection by Coach Kwesi Appiah for this year’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt.

Nana Akufo-Addo made the appeal to the striker on Tuesday evening (21 May 2019) in a telephone conversation just a day after Gyan announced his retirement from the national team over a captainship row.

Gyan accused Kwesi Appiah of denying him the opportunity of captaining the Black Stars in the competition.

Nana Akufo-Addo informed Asamoah Gyan “of the considerable national disquiet over his decision to retire from the Black Stars,” a statement from Mr Eugene Arhin, the president’s spokesperson said.

The president also held a meeting with the Minister of Youth and Sports, the President of the GFA Normalisation Committee, and the Chair of the Management Committee of the Black Stars.

The meeting, a continuation of the regular meetings the President holds with them, discussed, among others, the preparations being made toward AFCON 2019, and how to end Ghana’s AFCON trophy drought.

The Africa Cup of Nations kicks off on 21 June.

The Black Stars are in Group F with Cameroon, Benin and Guinea-Bissau.

Gyan, who made his international debut at the age of 17 against Somalia in 2003, is Ghana’s all-time goal scorer in the national team with 51 goals in his 106 appearances.

He has also featured in three World Cups – 2006, 2010 and 2014.
