Brussels sprouts are no longer the ‘most disliked’ food in the UK

For years Brussels sprouts have been hidden under mash potatoes and shoved to the sides of plates.

Fussy eaters have done everything they can to avoid eating the spherical green vegetables.

But according to new research, sprouts are no longer the UK’s most disliked food – and they aren’t even in the top three anymore.

Meal kit provider HelloFresh has revealed that a new food has taken the crown as the number one most hated by Brits – and that’s olives.

This is followed closely by gherkins and seafood such as prawns.

Brussels sprouts came in the fourth spot, while tuna was fifth and mushrooms were sixth.

Also in the top 10 most disliked were raisins, fish, chicken on the bone and red meat.

Surprisingly, coriander, which many people believe has a soap-like flavour, did not make it into the top 10, but instead came in at number 11.

HelloFresh’s research also found that the average child refuses to eat two meals per week, but they might not be the fussiest people in the house.

This is because of the 2,000 adults polled, only one in 10 said they were happy to eat whatever was put in front of them.

As many as half also admitted they’d write off certain foods before they’d even tried them.

Moreover nearly half of those polled said food was going to waste because their partner wouldn’t eat what they’d cooked for them.

And despite four in 10 Brits saying they feel embarrassed about their eating habits, three in five confessed to asking for something on the menu at a friend’s house or restaurant to be changed/removed.

Andre Dupin, Head Chef at HelloFresh UK, said: “Dinner time should be an opportunity to expand food horizons, however our study shows half of adults completely disregard foods they don’t like and won’t give them a second chance.

“Often, people dislike the way something is cooked and will enjoy the same ingredient served in a different way. For example people might enjoy roasted vegetables but dislike boiled vegetables.”
