Akufo-Addo’s $1m per constituency promise was a scam – NDC

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) says President Akufo-Addo has “monumentally failed” to honour his promise of providing every constituency with $1 million per year.

Addressing the media at the maiden edition of the NDC’s Weekly Press Briefing, the Minority Chief Whip, Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka alleged that although the President has received the most resources as leader of the country, he has done very little to show for it.

The Asawase MP stressed that all that President can boast of after his three and half years in power are a few toilets, warehouses, markets mechanised water systems, ambulances and sub-standard dugouts.

“It is instructive to note that per the one million dollars every year per constituency promise of President Akufo-Addo, each constituency should have received a total of $3 million, which leads to a total of $825 million by now (excluding that of the year 2020), or benefitted from development projects equivalent to that amount by now,” he added.

Citing what the Ministry of Special Development Initiatives submitted to Parliament in the 2020 Budget Statement, Mr Muntaka said that the total cost of capital expenditure projects undertaken so far under the $1million per constituency promise is from 2017 – 2019.

He indicated that it summed up to ¢462,979,103, equivalent to just $81 million which represents 9.8 percent of the total of $825 million that government promised.

He further noted that the project costs have not only been inflated but also MPs have been sidelined in the choice and execution of development projects in their respective constituencies.

Comparing the Akufo-Addo led administration to that of former President Mahama’s, he stated the entire $81 million spent is lesser than that of the Community Water and Sanitation Agency under the NDC regime.
